John Nobbs and Jacqui Carroll are amongst the few international teachers sanctioned by Tadashi Suzuki to teach his training method. They convey its deep principles through classic, Suzuki exercises as well as through their own evolutions of the training. Their work has developed out of an ongoing dialogue with Suzuki’s work and their own culture and aesthetics. John Nobbs performed with Suzuki’s company internationally. Jacqui Carroll’s productions have been invited by Mr Suzuki to Japan, most recently in 2009 when they presented the mystery play, Badengood. Frank Theatre’s repertoire includes staging’s of classics such as Macbeth, Oedipus and Orpheus, alongside more contemporary Australian plays, such as Doll 17 – a version of Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll.
The workshop offers precisely framed exercises alongside structured improvisations to develop the sensibility of the performer. In addition to working the physical, vocal, mental and imaginative aspects of the performer, Nobbs and Carroll explore the performer’s relationship to space, objects and music as the creative partners of the performer. The training cultivates a strong sense of the ensemble while also exploring the performer’s own individual energetic presence and sense of self-definition. The screening on Saturday will show Frank Theatre repertoire as well as the work of Tadashi Suzuki.
The work is physically challenging and is aimed at professional performers and students of performance. However, all are welcome, and no prior experience is necessary. Nobbs and Carroll are very experienced in supporting all levels.
