2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Butoh and the continuing influence of this Japanese art form on the development of world contemporary performance.

Tatsumi Hijikata's performance of Kinjiki (Forbidden Colours) in 1959 is considered the first ever Butoh performance, and since then Butoh has taken root in all continents of the world.
